We came to the USA when I was 13 years of age. Both my brothers and I had gone to a Gujarati medium school in Gujarat, India. Therefore, we spoke no English when we were admitted to school here. Subsequently, I was dropped a grade (from 9th in India to 8th in California). I spent four years in ESL (English as a Second Language) program in junior high school as well as in high school.

It was quite difficult at first to adjust to the new culture."

Dr Vijay Aswani's faith journey...

I was born into a Sindhi Hindu family in Lagos, Nigeria. During my childhood in Nigeria and Liberia, my mother taught me the Hindu prayers. At home, we worshipped the goddess Laxmi, but also prayed to Guru Nanak, as well as following the teaching of Jhule Lal.
