Naya Jeevan FAQ

Social Security Number

Q : What is a Social Security Number?

A : Registering for the Social Security Number (SSN) was one of my top priorities upon arrival because the law requires us to have one in order to work and it is also necessary if we want to obtain a local driving license (note : you can get SSN for work or for some benefits, but not for the sole purpose of getting the driving license). On the other hand, you do not need the SSN to deal with a bank, educational institution or for private health insurance. The SSN is basically our identity code and will be used by banks and businesses for background checks and credit history. Your employer is required by the law to enter your SSN at the top of your W-2 form which is an income statement used for filing your taxes.

Q : How to get your SSN? And what do you do once you have it?

A : You can apply for the SSN at your local Social Security office (check White Pages* for addresses) free of charge. Opening hours are Mon to Fri 9am to 4pm – no appointments required, but it may take a few hours of your time. You need to bring along all required paperwork as they will interview you on the spot, and give you a temporary number while they process your application. The processing takes no more than 2 weeks, after which you will receive your SSN card in the mail. The SSN card is nothing more than a piece of paper but it is very important for the security of your identity. So do NOT carry it around with you. It is recommended that you memorize the number and leave the card in a safe place.

Q : What do you need to obtain your SSN?

A : As a legal working alien, you will need to bring the following for your interview :

  1. Completed Form SS-5 (print from www.socialsecurity.gov/online/ss-5.html)
  2. Bring at least 2 original (or certified true copies) documents to prove age, identity, work eligibility and legal status (see www.socialsecurity.gov/ss5doc/)
  3. I-94 card (arrival/departure record) which should be stapled to your passport

*White Pages – refers to the white pages of the local phone directory (eg. Clarke Phone book, AT&T Yellow/White pages).
